Description
Karna II: Son of Surya
Karna II, also known simply as Karna, is one of the central figures in the Indian epic, the Mahabharata. Born to the maiden Kunti, Karna was the son of Surya, the Sun God. His birth was a result of a boon given to Kunti, who, in her youth, had been blessed with the ability to invoke any deity and bear a child with their divine power. Invoking Surya, she bore Karna, but due to her unmarried status, she placed the newborn in a basket and set him afloat in the river.
Karna was discovered and raised by a charioteer’s family, which led to his lifelong association with low caste, despite his royal heritage. He was a peerless warrior, skilled in archery and combat, and loyal to Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas. His unwavering allegiance to Duryodhana and his rivalry with Arjuna were defining aspects of his life. Karna’s true identity as Kunti’s son was revealed late in the epic, but by then, his destiny was already sealed.
Known for his generosity, valor, and tragic fate, Karna’s life reflects themes of loyalty, honor, and the complex interplay of fate and free will in the Mahabharata. His character embodies the tragic hero who is bound by circumstances beyond his control.
